This project is an extension to an existing aged-care facility, Buckley Caring Centre. The new two-storey wing, named “Wandoo,” accommodates 74 high-care beds at the Amaroo Village site in Gosnells, Western Australia.

In order to create a seamless finish, the new building needed to blend with the existing buildings. With this in mind, the roof tiles and wall colour were selected to match the original building materials.

The roof steps down where the old meets the new, so the elements do not jar against each other. The port-cochere roof twists to form a subtle curve and barges project to convey a resort-style welcome to those approaching the building.

The architectural team for Wandoo was Gary Batt, Adrian Grose and Glenn Howat, with interiors by de Fiddes Design.
