Terracotta Roof Tiles, Planum Roja
Narrow lots create challenges for building designers trying to create enjoyable living spaces with minimal space. The challenge is successfully overcome in this project in Malvern East, Melbourne. The street frontage, floor plan and design elements have all been adjusted to suit the narrow lot, with a stunning result.
In most homes, the living room is located at the front of the property, but in this project it has been moved to the back so the main living area is overlooking a courtyard and entertaining space, creating a seamless link between the inside and out.
The small street frontage has been cleverly addressed with what appears as two frontages. On one side, the garage wall has been clad in vertical timber beams and the roof, a flat steel rectangular skillion design that extends from the main building, creates a contemporary finish. The left side of the project uses natural and time-honoured building finishes, with honed sandstone blocks on the walls and clay roof tiles in terracotta above. The roof contrasts with the rest of the building, with diagonal angles and a modern design.
