2016 Think Brick Awards – Robin Dods Terracotta Roof Award Announced

Announced at Think Brick Australia’s Gala Dinner at the Ivy Ballroom in Sydney on Friday, 5 August, twenty-five outstanding projects from across Australia have been recognized in the 2016 Think Brick Awards, Australia’s richest design awards. This year marks a decade of the Think Brick Awards, a program that celebrates excellence in the use of clay brick, concrete masonry and roof tiles by Australia’s best architects and designers.

A new Award introduced in 2016, the Robin Dods Terracotta Roof Award rewards the best commercial or residential architecture project that features the prominent use of terracotta roof tiles. Robin Dods believed in sustainable design to suit the climate, especially in roofing. His distinctive style of gablet roofs for

domestic dwellings, which combined passive solar design while allowing for ventilation and insulation, became prevalent all over Queensland in the early 1900s.

While all of the finalists in 2016 eloquently demonstrated the metamorphosis from material beginnings to masterpiece, the winner of the inaugural Robin Dods Terracotta Roof Award was Elias House by Harmer Architecture, which received a $15,000 cash prize.

The Elias House is a two-storey infill dwelling in the backyard of an existing warehouse in Melbourne’s North Fitzroy. The combination of brick, terracotta and timber grounds the house in its suburban context. Terracotta tiles were selected for their natural beauty and texture and their enduring colour retention, which will maintain the aesthetic of the house for years to come.

The Awards jury made the following comments about the winner:

This charismatic home beautifully blends terracotta tiles and timber to present a unique façade that is both intriguing and welcoming. The colour variations and vertical tiling are standout elements of the design.

What we see in the blending of the dark materials is that terracotta can be many colours other than orange and, of course, being terracotta, we know that those colours are never going to fade and they are going to last a lifetime.”
